This past Friday (8/20), Atlanta Urban League Young Professionals (AULYP) hosted its signature Dream Catchers Awards Reception, held once a year to honor young leaders and organizations who demonstrate excellence in serving and empowering their community, as well as recent high school graduates who have demonstrated academic excellence. These leaders are chosen based on their contributions in areas relevant to AULYP’s empowerment initiatives that include education, economic, health and quality of life, and civic engagement and leadership.

AULYP awarded Big Kidz Foundation with its Dream Catchers 2010 Empowerment Award. Grammy Award winning Atlanta rapper, Big Boi– one half of the internationally recognized group Outkast- and Big Kidz Foundation’s executive director Jennifer Lester accepted the award on behalf of Big Kidz Foundation of which Antwan ‘Big Boi’ Patton is the founder and CEO. Big Kidz Foundation, a non profit organization, was established in 2006 with a mission to nurture the intellect of youth by providing them with culturally diverse experiences in the field of humanities, which will expand their leadership abilities and create social-conscious individuals.

C.J. Stewart, founder of L.E.A.D. Inc. (Launch, Expose, Advise, Direct) and former Chicago Cubs outfielder, accepted AULYP’s Community Leader Award; Howard Franklin, manager of Jason Carter’s successful bid for Georgia State Senate and founder of Influence Factory, accepted AULYP’s Community Advocate Award and State Farm Insurance received the Community Service Award that was accepted by Myles C. Mitchom on behalf of the company.

The event began with a mix and mingle, continued with an awards program and ended with a networking reception. Nancy Flake Johnson, president of Atlanta Urban League challenged young professionals, at the close of the program, to do their part in impacting the community.
