There are a few musical roles that go hand in hand like an unspoken kinship, and producer vs DJ is definitely one. There’s a mutual need and unstated respect that fits effortlessly into this equation. Producers certainly need DJs (and vice versa); who else outside of the artist can bring that art to life?
Bryan Michael Cox can overly relate to perfecting this kinship. This Grammy Awards winning songwriter/producer has worked with BEst in the industry and has no plans of letting up anytime soon. Merging artistry has always BEen one of B.Cox’s strongpoints, but when you hear how he relates to the DJs around the country, you’ll quickly see that his list seems more like working with his brothers…that’d BE one huge family, but can you imagine the music that’d come from that crib?
BE ENTERTAINED MAGAZINE: WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE DJS OUT TODAY?
BRYAN MICHAEL COX: DJ Jaycee (@DJJaycee) is one of my favorites. DJ Cassidy (@DJCassidy) out of New York, DJ Mars (@DJMars404), Trauma (@DJTrauma). I came up with a lot of these kats so some of them are my favorite DJs by default BEcause I came up with em. I came up with The Aphilliates (@TheAphilliates), I came up with Super Friends, you know, some of the Go DJs in Houston, like Hi C (@GoDJHiC), Good Grief (@DJGoodGrief). I’m very familiar with the DJ culture; it’s a lot of em you know what I mean; from Clinton Sparks to Felly Fell. I know all these kats.
BE ENTERTAINED MAGAZINE: FROM A PRODUCERS STANDPOINT, WHAT MAKES A GOOD DJ?
BRYAN MICHAEL COX: For me, I’m about the music. I know that DJs play what the people want to hear at times, and some DJs play to politics, but I’m about the music; that’s why DJ Cassidy and Jaycee are some of my favorites BEcause, they don’t really play to the politics of “oh I gotta play the hottest record now”, they kinda go with the crowd. I think if the DJ can go with the crowd and can make the crowd feel some certain kind of way; I know some DJs that play somethings and you just go back & BE like “awwwwww” and it just takes you back. That’s what a good DJ is to me, and getting a good knowledge of music. I commend Jaycee on his knowledge of music.
BE ENTERTAINED MAGAZINE: ANY PERSONAL PROJECTS YOU WANT TO PUT OUT THERE?
BRYAN MICHAEL COX: I’m working on BErtell’s album [Jokes about me just interviewing BErtell prior to interviewing him]. His album Twelve Megabites coming in the first quarter of next year. He’s gotta new single out called “Headboard” featuring Bobby V; that thing is so serious and on fire right now.
BE ENTERTAINED MAGAZINE: SHOUTS OUT TO BOBBY V, OUR FIRST ISSUE COVER ARTIST!
BRYAN MICHAEL COX: I gotta project coming out, well I have a single out now called “I Need You Tonight” that went over to cross-over radio. It’s more of a pop sounding thing, well it’s really like a merger BEtween pop and R&B. I put it out there on a whim, I added it to itunes and immediately sold like 1500 singles in like 5 days; and this is BEfore radio and any promotions. So we just shipped everything to radio & hopefully we’ll get the response back. I have an artist named Aion Clarke (@AionClarke) from Canada who’s blowing up in Canada right now. I got a few irons in the fire that I’m working on.
BE ENTERTAINED MAGAZINE: WE CERTAINLY APPRECIATE THE TIME & LOOK FORWARD TO SUPPORTING YOUR ARTISTS AND PROJECTS
BRYAN MICHAEL COX: BEfore I go, I have to shout out Tony Neal; can’t forget about the Core DJs. Tony Neal is my fam, DJ A Plus; like I said, I know so many DJs, that my mind almost slipped, but can’t forget about Tony Neal and the Core DJs.Tweet
