Chantel “Chani” Christie may BE the daughter of two famous parents, but she’s never had a problem stepping into her own. This 18 year old superstar in the making already has two albums under her BElt, has done ambassador work for HIV/AIDS Prevention, authored a book, and still keeps a daily smile pondering what her next big move will BE. Chani’s positive tunnel aspirations sets her far apart from mediocrity, a word that Chani quickly removed from her personal vocabulary. She’s BEen under our radar for quite some time, so we had to sit down with our former cover artist’s daughter to get the scoop on her marvelous accomplishments firsthand.
THANKS FOR SITTING DOWN WITH US CHANI, YOUR MOM SAID SUCH GREAT THINGS ABOUT YOU THAT WE HAD TO CATCH UP WITH YOU ABOUT WHAT’S GOING ON WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC.
I have a lot going on right now. As far as the album, I recently released my sophomore album. It dropped on February 14th, Valentine’s Day of this year. I’ve BEen getting a lot of god responses & I’m really happy about that. I didn’t really know what it would BE like. When I came out with the first album, I didn’t really have any expectations, but with this album, I has so many more expectations. I told myself I had to do BEtter than the last one, which I definitely captured on this project. It’s definitely fun, and quirky, and girly. I covered a lot if different topics that girls of all ages can relate to.
HOW WAS THE TRANSITION FROM BETWEEN YOUR DEBUT AND SOPHOMORE ALBUMS?
The transition from my 1st album My Dreams to this one, it was definitely different. On the 1st album, I was just letting the producers & the professionals do what they know how to do, but with this record I was able to step in and BE more vocal. I co-wrote & wrote a lot of the songs, which is definitely different from the 1st album. It’s fun & it’s me; it talks about where I’m at at this point in my life.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SONG ON THE ALBUM?
I say this in every interview & then I read it and always say “why did I say that…” [she laughs] It’s weird BEcause my favorite slow song, or super emotional song is “The Hardest Part” BEcause I was going through something at that time, & it was just so significant & a personal song on my CD. The upBEat one I love would have to BE my single “Gimme Love” featuring Lil Mama. It’s just such a fun and funky track & it reminds me of her and Avril Lavign’s song “Girlfriend (Remix)” & it was just so dope that she would jump on it. When I heard it, I knew it was the perfect song for her to get on & we’ve BEen getting a lot of love on it.
YOU COME FROM A POWERHOUSE FAMILY. HOW WAS IT GROWING UP WITH YOUR PARENTS ALWAYS IN THE SPOTLIGHT?
I was born into it. When I was born my father was playing for the Knicks, then he was traded to the Lakers, the Sonics, so it came as second nature to me. It was never really weird & I don’t think it was for my little brother either since he was born into it too. He was born at the height of my dad’s career. It was never like you have this 5 or 10 year old & then their dad is drafted into the NBA. Some people ask if I wish I lived a normal life, but for me this is normal.
WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU LIKE TO PORTRAY THROUGH YOUR MUSIC?
I really want to always remain positive in my music. I always say that I’m kind of like the “girl next door”; yes I have these superstar parents, and most people expect me not to have feelings, but it hurts me too when I get my heart broken or I lose friends, or when I argue with my friends…and all of the things that girls and young women go through. I like to portray all of that in my music. I like to BE that option for girls to listen to & say, “you know what, I’m not alone…she goes through the same things that I do on a daily basis & even though she has these famous parents, we’re one in the same”.
FOR PEOPLE THAT WANT TO WALK IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SINCE YOU STARTED SO YOUNG?
I would definitely say make sure you have a really strong team around you of people that you trust & BElieve in and people that trust & BElieve in you…and you don’t have a doubt in your mind about your relationship with them. A lot of times, teens and people that come into this industry get rid of their parents & the people that have BEen there since jump street & that’s where they go wrong. I’m blessed enough to have a core group of people that are still around me to this day. Keep the faith as well. There’s a lot of times that you’ll BE down and out & all of the opportunities seem like they’re gone…or things aren’t moving as fast as they should BE; but keep the faith in that when GOD knows that it’s your time, and if he wants you to do, it;s a no brainer.
TALK TO ME ABOUT LOVE. WHAT DOES LOVE MEAN TO A NEW 18 YEAR OLD CHANI (WHO CELEBRATED A GEMINI BIRTHDAY ON JUNE 1ST)? DO YOU HAVE A BOYFRIEND YET?
You know for me right now, love really isn’t a contender in my fight right now. I’m very consumed with promoting the album, and really just branching off and starting the rest of my life. I’m really building this wonderful successful career, so love really hasn’t come into play, but if I meet someone I would entertain the idea. Whatever happens happens, but I just want it to happen organically and that’s what I actually put into my album. Sometimes us girls try to force love, or try to force someone to BE with you, but all of that stuff is just ridiculous. As I get older, I’m seeing that you just have to let that stuff come to you, and when it does, it’s real.
YOUR MOMMY JUST GOT BIG NEWS, OR THE WORLD JUST GOT THE BIG NEWS, THAT YOUR MOM JACKIE CHRISTIE WILL BE JOINING THE CAST OF BASKETBALL WIVES (WHICH I PRIDE MYSELF ON CALLING A FEW MONTHS BACK WHEN JACKIE WAS ON OUR COVER); WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS BIG STEP?
We’ve BEen keeping the secret for so long now, and I’ve BEen honestly biting my tongue like come on mom, come on VH1, make the announcement so I don’t have to keep this secret anymore. One they finally did make the announcement, I was really excited for her. It’s an amazing opportunity & an amazing platform for her to show who she really is. A lot of people have these preconceived notions of who they think she is, or how our family is, or how her relationship is, and I’m excited to see them show it. This season, almost all of the wives are married to someone, so I’m excited for them to show that different spin. Get ready, you guys are going to see some crazy stuff.
