Rotimi is a bonafide triple threat BOSS. He’s working with world renowned talent & has a positive message in every endeavor that he involves himself in whether it’s with his music, acting, or modeling.
It’s evident that Rotimi is a newcomer to the game, but in just a short period of time, he’s gained a huge fan base & has put himself in the right places at the right times so that he’s considered for national campaigns & deals.
Rotimi took some time out of his busy schedule, he recently was named the new face of AKOO Clothing, & he’s also filming the Starz network show ‘BOSS’, to discuss everything he has going on & the motivation BEhind his message.
AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH, WE KNOW THAT MUSIC HAS ALWAYS BEEN YOUR FIRST LOVE. TALK TO THE READERS ABOUT YOUR WHAT YOU’RE DOING MUSICALLY.
I’ve BEen performing since I was about 6 years old. I’ve performed on the same stage as Jennifer Hudson TI, N.E.R.D, Jaime Fox (who is a big mentor of mine both singing and acting), Estelle, along with putting out 2 mixtapes that have done extremely well virally. I’ve had videos played on VH1, VH1 Soul, MTV, as well as played all over Africa. I’m currently working on my EP. My style of music would BE contemporary R&B. I have a real soulful voice & like to sing about real life situations. I like authentic storytelling. I also feel like my style has a little bit of crossover appeal. I really try not to limit myself musically.
WHO’S CURRENTLY IN YOUR IPOD?
I always got the Lauryn Hill poppin’. I like Drake a lot. I love The-Dream. I’m a big fan of Marques Houston’s last project that he put out, so I’m actually playing that right now.
WHAT DO YOU ULTIMATELY WANT TO DO WITH MUSIC?
I want music to BE what I’m most known for. I feel like music is my passion and my God given talent & I want to use it as a tool. I want music to BE the first way that I get my voice heard & to portray my message which is ultimately that you can go to school & still BE a part of the things that you want to BE a part of. I kinda want to BE the voice of my generation.
IF YOU COULD SET UP THE PERFECT STUDIO SESSION, WITH ANYONE DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD BE AT THE SESSION?
Well, if I’m just starting the session I would want to co-write the record with The-Dream or Ne-Yo. A feature would BE Drake, and just to have a good ear and tell me if it’s a good record or not would BE Quincy Jones & Michael Jackson.
TELL ME ABOUT YOU AMBITIONS WITH ACTING.
I’ve BEen acting for a year now, so I’m really learning as I go, but BEing around people like Kelsey Grammer, Mario Van Peebles, Sanaa Lathan, & now TI, it forces you to learn, like a crash course, on the go. I really think that’s the BEst way for me to BEcome exposed to it. I love acting. It’s another passion of mine. The show on Starz [BOSS] is incredible & to BE a part of a Golden GloBE winning show, it’s just like you want to continue to study. I want to get into movies & continue to grow & BE respected as an actor.
HOW’S IT BEEN WORKING WITH KELSEY GRAMMER?
It’s one of the biggest blessings that God has given me. Just even watching him as a professional, the way he talks to people & the way he carries himself on set. We had our first scene [together] a few weeks ago & I was nervous. Working with someone of that caliber, you gotta bring it, you gotta BE on your A Game; & to get to watch him so early in my career is really a blessing.
Working with AKOO just made sense. It was the perfect fit & at this point in my career, AKOO, the name itself means ‘A King Of Oneself’ & when TI explained that to me, I was like oh I’m in. The clothing itself, you can wear AKOO anywhere. It’s so versatile & that’s the type of artist & person I’m trying to BE, where I can step into any situation & I can fit in and still BE fly, yet not have to do too much. The clothing speaks for itself. TI is a big brother to me now & having his guidance & me seeing how his business is run, it just fits perfectly. It’s a clothing line on the rise & it has a lot of big plans in the future, so I’m 100% down with it.
HOW WAS IT MEETING TI FOR THE FIRST TIME?
We actually met and had dinner in L.A. He was cool. You know how sometimes you meet celebrities & they have these egos, but it was a breath of fresh air to sit down with him & his wife. TIP & I have the same acting manager, so just sitting listening to him & learning from him was one of the BEst things that could happen in my career right now. He’s a lifelong friend now, for real.
Rotimi also has big plans for the near future. He wants to BE a mentor and give back to South Africa. He has plans to get involved with foundations that speak to youth. He really wants to show his generation that that they can go to school & still live their dreams. Education is important to this BOSS & he wants his generation to really know themselves and find who they are as a people.
