Cover Story: Tami Roman – BEautiful Inside & Out

TAMIFRONT

Longevity in the game seems to BE a distant memory, especially given the current state of entertainment. Reality TV seems to reign supreme, giving excited watchers a quick glimpse into the lives of instant fame risers, most of which seem to disappear in front of our very eyes the moment that their story line reaches a dull moment.

While some people look at reality TV as a possible plague, actress Tami Roman has mastered the art and continues to showcase just how to properly do it. It’s no secret that Tami has BEen a controversial front-runner on hit reality shows like MTV’s The Real World & VH1’s Basetball Wives, but it’s what she’s doing to parallel her reality TV career that makes her such a successful and BEautiful threat, that and the fact that she’s known for serving you your news on a hot platter of truth, mixed with a side of not really giving two cares.

Her tell-it-like-it-is attitude is what primarily put Tami Roman in the BE spotlight, but her passion for her career, and new life changes is what made her oh so perfect for the cover spot. Tami has undergone a complete image upgrade and wanted to share it first hand with the BE Magazine readers.

WE SEE YOU’VE UNDERGONE QUITE A CHANGE IN YOUR LOOK, LET THE BE READERS KNOW HOW THEY CAN GET AS FINE AS TAMI ROMAN

I started working on myself and my mental, and that caused me to say you know what Tami, get your presentation together too. I found a product called NV Clinical, and I know people are infamous for attaching their names and faces to all type of products, but I actually used this product and it worked for me. Then NV contacted me to BE the spokesperson for the product BEcause I had a real life true testimony. I started taking the NV, it has Mangosteen in it, which people don’t know is a weight loss complex that kind of serves as a radical toxin remover. So all the things that were in my system, from smoking and what not, it kind of eliminates those things and re-shaped my body. I was sold on NV. Then I started eating right and incorporating more greens into my system, salads, vegetables, and more fruits. I top that off with at least 15 minutes of exercising per day, but that didn’t just mean one thing for 15 minutes…I’d do jumping jacks for 15 minutes, then hit the treadmill for 15 minutes, just getting my cardio together. That’s what really did it. I was well on my way to a size 16 and now I’m fitting in some size 6s, so I’m very very happy.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE BEST THING ABOUT YOUR NEW LOOK?

From a physical standpoint, I love that I have a slim waist again, and that I am actually properly proportionate now. I have that 34/28/29 going on (laughs). From a mental, it’s just people know me in this generation from Basketball Wives, and when I came to the show, I was coming off of a hardship. I was coming off of working in Corporate America, catching the train to work, just really on the grind, and pulling things together for me and my family, but that’s not really indicative of who I was BEfore Basketball Wives, BEfore my hardships. I’ve always BEen into fashion, I’ve always BEen into my appearance, my clothes. I’ve always BEen acting for the past 14 years, so it really is an opportunity to get back and show the world who I really am in terms of my presentation, that they may not have BEen familiar with.

LET’S TALK BASKETBALL WIVES. LET’S DIVE INTO YOUR CHARACTER…I FEEL LIKE YOU’VE TAKEN AN ‘ALL THESE B*TCHES IS MY SONS’ APPROACH, HOW DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR CHARACTER IS PERCEIVED ON THE SHOW?

I think that I am a person that tries to BE as transparent on the show all of the time and sometimes that mean me saying exactly how I feel about a person whether they like it or not. Whether people like my advice or not, I’m just going to get things off of my chest. Sometimes people take that the wrong way, but I’m not going to BE anything other than that. What I have learned is HOW to say things. Now I’m learning how to respect that not everyone is going receive what I am saying, or what I want them to, if I don’t articulate it properly. I’m learning how to properly articulate or “READ” as Miss NeNe [Leakes] would say, without getting “rah-rah”.

YOU GUYS HAD SOMEWHAT OF A GROUNDBREAKING SEASON BECAUSE THE TONE OF REALITY TV TRIED TO TAKE SOMEWHAT OF A TURN AFTER SEEING YOU LADIES’ SEASON. WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS THE TONE OF REALITY TV & DO YOU THINK YOU LADIES TAKE THE BLAME FOR A LOT OF THINGS?

Well, I think that I’m not going to use the word BLAME. Honestly, I have to say that the girls on my show, we’re just living our lives. We don’t put on for the camera. That’s why some moments really play out the way they do, and when people watch they’re like “oh my God”, but that’s how we really handled those situations. Now…when I watch other shows, I’m not necessarily sure if people are really BEing themselves, and if they would really react that way, or are they just trying to get ratings or top our ratings. You know we get over 4.6 million views just by BEing ourselves, so their may BE some people that feel like they need to ACT to top that. [Shots Fired]

I HAVE TO SAY THAT I’M REALLY EXCITED TO SEE YOUR SEASON COME BACK…L.A. WAS A LITTLE HARD TO STOMACH THIS TIME AROUND.

People always talk to me about the L.A. show, honestly, I watch L.A. in hindsight. I don’t watch it when it airs. We’re either usually taping, or in my case I’m usually traveling or taping for BElle’s, so I had to DVR it and sit down one weekend and watch em all. But you know what, in their defense, they’re following us. That’s like Solange and BEyonce. [laughs]. Sometimes it’s hard to just BE you BEcause the other people are so great. They have a rough road, but I think they are coming into their own. They’re finding themselves, and finding the tone for THEIR show, as opposed to just trying to mirror ours.

ON THAT NOTE…CONGRATULATIONS ON THE NEW SHOW! TALK TO ME ABOUT BEING LORETTA ON BELLE’S.

I am so happy to BE involved with BElle’s BEcause it takes me back to scripted, which is what I really love to do, that’s really where my passion lies. I get to play this amazing character, who gets to wear these amazing clothes. I get to work with an amazing cast and I have to just commend TVONE BEcause from a network standpoint, they looked at what was missing and what people are longing for. There’s so much reality TV, almost like an overload, so people wanted a return back into scripted programming, but they also wanted it to BE something of substance. TVONE teamed up with Ed WeinBErger, who was responsible for shows like “The Cosby Show” and “Amen” and “Taxi” that are phenomenal and have withstood the test of time. We really took it back with this show and we’re talking about real things like racial hang ups, but we’re using comedy to keep the audience engaged. The grandchild all the way to the grandmother can watch BElle’s. It’s really a blessing that they chose me to BE a part of it, and I’m really excited for everyone to see it.

I’M TO UNDERSTAND THAT BELLE’S TAKES PLACE IN A SOUL FOOD RESTAURANT, SO THE PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW CAN TAMI BURN IN THE KITCHEN OR WERE YOU TAKING NOTES ON SET?

I actually can cook! [laughs]. I had a menu of 15 good things. In terms of soul food, I do a mean short rib, with greens and a nice dirty rice. I can do it like that, or if I’m on a certain type of date, and we want to keep it simple, I can do a nice grilled tilapia with a fresh green salad. You know, things like that. I’m real good with a nice Caesar Salad.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT WITH BELLE’S PREMIERING NEXT MONTH?

I’m most excited about the cast. I had the opportunity to work with some amazing talents and it was so family oriented. I really think that people are going to recognize right off that we really felt like a family off camera, so when it came time to do our lines, it was all love; the chemistry was there. Sometimes it takes shows a little while to find that chemistry, but for us it was just instant and automatic. It’s different from reality TV BEcause with reality TV, they prefer for everybody to NOT get along, that’s what makes that machine work. With this situation, everyone was happy, and ready to work, and actually wanted to come to work. We would hang out after work, and that really for me is the one thing that I was missing in reality TV. Coming back to scripted, I’m really happy to have found that family feel again.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WATCHING AND SUPPORTING?

Well, I love Renee Graziano from Mob Wives, so I catch that. I love NeNe, Kandi, Cynthia, so I always try to catch The Real Housewives of Atlanta. You know what, I’m feeling Honey Boo Boo (laughs), so I watch that, and I also love Abby Lee Miller, so I watch Dance Moms as well. That’s really the realm of the shows that I am watching right now…oh, and Scandal. Let me not forget Scandal BEcause that is my numBEr one favorite prime time show. When Game of Thrones comes back on, I’ll BE checking for that too.

I WAS GOING TO AS YOU IF YOU WATCHED SCANDAL. THAT OLIVIA POPE IS SOMETHING ELSE HUH?

You know, I just want to bow down to Kerry Washington. She opened the door and caused network television to realize that black girls can hold down the hem of a show and carry it while keeping an audience. We don’t have to always just BE the doctor on the side or the lab tech, you know, we can actually run things. Scandal is one of the BEst written shows, it has an amazing cast, and if I had my wish, I could BE Olivia’s sister. I’d walk on through 2-3 times, you know…a little reoccurring. [laughs]. I really do love that show though, and now we have Meagan Good in Deception, so networks are really seeing that we can do this too. I’m excited for both of those ladies.

BEFORE I LET YOU GO, WHAT ELSE DO YOU HAVE UP THAT SMALL SIZED SLEEVE YOU’RE ROCKING THESE DAYS?

For me, it’s all about business. 2013 is all about progression and investing in yourself. How I’ve chosen to do that is by launching my nail polish and lip gloss lines, which is called Love Cosmetics, which will BE followed up by my full cosmetics line called Perfect Face. I have a fragrance coming out, a cook book coming out, so I’m really excited for people to come to know Tami Roman the business woman. All of things will BE happening in the next year, and my Love Cosmetics line will BE launching within the next 2-3 weeks. I’m shooting a short film, I’m directing…which is gonna star my daughter Lyric. I’ve BEen with my daughter Jazz in the studio, she’s just BEen working with Vincent HerBErt on some tracks. The train is moving, so I’m really excited for this time in my life to BE lucrative and eventful. Any mistakes that I’ve made in regards to my personal, now’s the time to rectify those things and make changes.
