DJ Scream: Taking Over the Scene by Courtney Shaw

DJScreamFRONT

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Atlanta’s very own DJ Scream. From listening to Hip Hop on a tape cassette, to having his own mobile phone app, take a peek at the evolution of DJ Scream.

As a young child he resided on the east side of Atlanta in an era where Hip Hop/Rap was seldom heard on the radio. Although he was surrounded by rappers growing up, Scream always knew that his role in music was much deeper. At the ripe age of 12 he knew that he wanted to have the power to “influence everybody’s mood” by spinning the records.

Fast forward 6 years and DJ Scream is a freshman in college. While working towards an Engineering degree at Tuskegee University he broke into DJing the club/party scene. He recalls that the first college party that “broke him in” was an annual Kappa party where he was the last minute DJ replacement.

All the buzz that stemmed from his success as a college DJ made him a local celebrity. Pretty soon he’d made the transformation from college DJ to the radio scene. After a stint of college radio shows, he earned a slot on one of Atlanta’a most prominent Hip Hip radio stations, 107.9 (WHTA-FM). Currently he hosts his own radio show “Hoodrich Radio” on Sirius XM Hip Hop Nation. The new platform has allowed him to interview some the biggest names in entertainment including the infamous Pinky interview.

In addition to the many titles he holds, he’s also a well respected mixtape DJ. His repertoire of artists range from Teairra Mari to most recently Soulja Boy. The duo collabed on Soulja’s latest project entitled “Juice”. When asked about the experience working with a fellow Atlanta artist, Scream explains that there is always chemistry between the two.

At the end of the day DJ Scream is one of the most well respected DJs in the game. Just this year he was awarded ‘DJ of the Year’ at the Southern Entertainment Awards. In addition to many roles he plays, he is also the first southern DJ to have a mobile phone app. The DJ Scream app is available in the Apple App Store and can BE downloaded on iPhones & iPads.

Even though he has already accomplished so much, he prides himself of BEing “progressive”. Currently Scream is in the process of putting out an album. Follow him on Twitter @DJScream
