Last night, Cincinnati was a buzz for the 1st Annual MERJ: WHERE FASHION AND HIP HOP MEET Fundraiser put together by Elementz Hip Hop. MERJ’s purpose was to raise funds for their youth program which brings together the worlds of Hip Hop, Fashion, Art, & Philanthropy.
The BIG event was held at the Elementz Hip Hop Youth Arts Center, and they utilized every inch of the space, offering attendees a taste of all of the program’s components including live music (rappers, singers, DJs, & live band), dancing, stepping, a silent auction, spoken word, and a cutting edge fashion show with the dancers “twerking” BEfore each model walked.
Attending MERJ really opened up my perspective on the immediate need to support programs of this caliber. The youth involved were so passionate about their artistry & to BE supported by such amazing people like Brother Abdullah (Elementz Hip Hop’s Program Creative Director), & Bart Schmidt (Program Sponsor/Supporter…and BE’s purpose for going) really shows that the love for today’s youth isn’t at all dead. It’s time to get involved and show our inner-city youth that they too can BE whatever they hope for, as long as they work hard at it & show LOVE, RESPECT, & SUPPORT for one another.
Check out pics from the performances & the fashion show. Keep checking back for video from MERJ…we’ll make sure you have enough footage to make you want to get get out there & support today’s young people…they’re truly our FUTURE!
