Emerging Designer: Joshua "JaJa" Casey

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of being introduced to a young man with an amazing eye and skill for design. I immediately could tell that he had this innate ability to conceptualize a garment, create the image and pattern, and was then able to bring that idea to fruition. In witnessing his talents and appreciate his drive for excellence, BE MAGAZINE has selected Joshua “JaJa” Casey as The BE STYLE Designer to Watch.

JaJa is a highly imaginative and creative student at American Intercontinental University in Atlanta. The double-major in Fashion Design and Marketing has a concentration in Costuming. Originally from New Orleans, LA., Joshua has been striving towards a professional career in the fashion industry for as long as he can remember. Working with highly prestigious companies such as Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras World and interning with Oliver Blake & Co. in Atlanta, JaJa is definitely going to be a force to be reckoned with.

Even as a freshman, pushing the envelope is a way of life for JaJa. He spends much of his time working in the field of Experimental Design with textiles such as plastics, metals, and other mediums. Understanding and utilizing the art of fabric manipulation, he has already made an impact in amongst his peers, professors, and in the fashion industry.

“I believe that gaining control over my life involves learning and then successfully applying a number of self-determination skills, such as goal setting, understanding my abilities and disabilities, problem solving, and self-advocacy.” JaJa clearly understands his gift. “The personal process of learning, using, and self-evaluating these skills in a variety of settings is at the heart of self-determination. I have always been motivated toward my personal achievement in the fashion industry. This instinctive drive has fueled my personal development and growth from working at such distinctive fashion and design companies. I take pride in these accomplishments and feel they reflect my true desire to succeed in the fashion industry. I’m not done with my dreams, but know that I have been successful so far because I’ve worked toward my goals regardless of my disadvantages.”

BE STYLE will continue to cover the matriculation of JaJa at AIU, in his first design competition next month at Furman University. The competition showcases and exposes the talents of aspiring designers at the collegiate level. BE STYLE will definitely be there not only as a monetary sponsor but a support to Joshua. He will be revealing a collection that includes an Haute Couture piece, two (2) Evening Gowns, a Swimwear, a Business Suit, and two Avant Garde pieces. The coverage of the competition will be an issue to follow.
