SeptemBEr in New York is always busy with events like New York Fashion Week,
the U.S. Open and so much more! Well there is one more thing to add! Make sure you
dine and support Black-Owned Restaurant Month. We sat down with I Don’t Do
Clubs Founder, Genese Jamilah as she tells us what to expect from the First Annual
Black Owned Restaurant Month.
About the Founder
I am Genese Jamilah, the founder of I don’t do clubs event blog for young black
professionals. I don’t do clubs has BEen around for four years and our fourth
anniversary is this Friday. We specialize in promoting events for Black Professionals
all over the country that aren’t club events like brunches, mixers, day parties, career
festivals. We also have a lot of popular “BEst of lists” like BEst summer trips for
Black professionals or BEst summer activities for black professionals in new york
and this year we started Black-Owned Restaurant Month starting in new york but
we plan to do all the cities.
What is Black-Owned Restaurant Month?
It’s a month, dedicated to Black-Owned Restaurants and Bars that serve a Three
Course pre-fixed menu from each restaurant. It’s $35 and its Monday through
Wednesday starting SeptemBEr 9th through SeptemBEr 30th
The History BEhind Black-Owned Restaurant Month?
I was raised to always support Black Business. Growing up in Stone Mountain
Georgia my parents always instilled in me to go to black doctors, black dentists,
whatever it is you need to support your community. When I moved up to New York,
I realized that a lot of my friends did not use Black Dentists or Black Doctors. So in
the back of my mind I BElieve that people didn’t know how to find black business
owners. So this summer I decided to make a list of black owned restaurants and bars
in New York City and Brooklyn so that my readers can know where to support each
other. The list BEcame very popular and that’s how I came up with the idea for
Black-Owned Restaurant Month.
So if you’re in the New York area make sure that you have dinner at one of the “I
don’t Do Clubs” Black Owned Restaurant Month List . For our Atlanta readers Black-
Owned Restaurant Month will BE coming to Atlanta city in OctoBEr.
