Mishon may not be the most popular name in our features this month. After researching the career of this young talent and talking to him, he made the ’09 Grad Class because he may have the most potential for future success of them all. Best known for his role as kid brother Tay on the ABC Family Channel drama “Lincoln Heights,” Mishon (pronounced MY-SHAWN) Ratliff began shooting its fourth season this spring. Hailing from Los Angeles, California, the youngster is careful to let you know that his talents don’t stop when the director yells “cut.”
“I’ve been singing since I was nine,” explains Ratliff. He apparently was growing up to be quite the shy kid until a fateful moment gave him a glimpse into the future. An unexpected “performance” at his great grandfather’s funeral gave family and loved ones a chance to take notice. “They asked if anybody had anything to say, and I stepped up to the microphone and started singing.”
His cousin, Demetreus “Doe Mac” Henderson, had recently started Dynasty Records and wanted to help his young relative polish his talent. Mishon began working on tracks with his cousin at age ten, even completing a couple of independent CD releases. In the meantime, Mishon got interested in acting. After rounds of auditions at age 12, the preteen took some time off but went back to it at age 14. One of his first auditions was for the “Lincoln Heights” pilot, which was later picked up. Eventually, Dynasty got a distribution deal with producer/songwriter Vincent Herbert’s new Streamline Records, a joint venture with Interscope Records – and also the home to Lady Gaga.
Fast forward to today and Mishon is honing his talents. “I just shot my second video, “Just A Kiss.” The album is done – it’s called The Yearbook It will be out soon. The reason I called it that is because all throughout the last year and a half that it took to make the album it felt like a school year – the ups and downs and good days and bad days.” The Yearbook features “A lot of great producers like Sean Garrett, Dre & Vidal, and The Underdawgs.” In a somewhat veiled attempt to showcase his own talent, the young talent goes solo this time vocally. “No collabos. It’s just me.”
So as Mishon gears up to release his major-label debut, he also preps for his budding acting career. “The 4th season is going to be bigger, badder and more exciting than ever. It begins August 4th.”
His future goals? “I would love to work with Ne-Yo, The-Dream, and Tricky Stewart.”
Ladies, Mishon insisted we let you know about his contest running on Mishon.net where you can win a date with the actor/singer! He told us to tell you that “you’ve gotta hurry up because the list is filling up quick!” (NOTE: Due to the various different prom schedules of the entries, Mishon will be launching a new contest where you can still win a date with him. Entries to the Prom contest will be considered in new contest.)
His advice to young talents like himself? “You can follow your dreams you can go where you wanna go you can be who you wanna be if you just be yourself.”
