Like our Issue XVIII songstress Dondria, our nineteenth issue featured artist Priscilla Renea was also discovered from her work on YouTube. She reportedly found a sense of stability in her following, having spent most of her childhood in the nomadic environment of a Navy family. In 2007, Priscilla added to her webcam celebrity and signed onto join MTV and its Say What? Karaoke show. The affect of the reciprocal branding was unmistakable; appearing on MTV pushed her YouTube hits past 2 million and her MySpace listenership to three-quarters of a million. Hailing from Vero Beach, Florida Renea is now signed to the legendary Capitol Records roster. On December 9, 2009 she released her major label debut Jukebox, to much fanfare.
Prior to this, Renea released the 3-song EP Hello My Apple, featuring three of her biggest YouTube uploads. The title track is the most popular and explains a simple crush: “So hard on the outside but oh-so-sweet on the inside;” the uptempo “I Fell in Love;”and “Cry,” an exercise in Renea’s vocal acrobatics. Her singing talent may only be matched by her songwriting abilities, having written for artists as diverse as Brandy and Shakira. But make no mistake, Priscilla is a true triple-threat, because her fashion sense, while developing, has earned her the attention of Kimora Lee Simmons and Giant Magazine.
