Rodney Perry is more than a funny man! Born in Chicago, Illinois; raised in Monroe, Louisiana, Rodney spent a great deal of time out in Los Angeles where he was cast for a role in the film; “The Informant” alongside Matt Damon. You may have seen him on BET’s Comic View alongside comedians Steve Harvey, George Lopez, and Cedric the Entertainer. He has come a long way from telling jokes at the end of class and practicing on friends and family while in the military. Now you can see him every weeknight as co-host to the BEautiful Ms. Mo’Nique on “The Mo’Nique Show” and also performing live at Mingle’s at 182 Courtland in Atlanta, GA on Tuesday nights in his own standup comedy show called “All The Way Live”. Coming in April 2011 you will also be able to see him in Tyler Perry’s “Madea’s Big Happy Family” (The Movie). Now with him currently residing with his family in Atlanta, GA, BE Entertained Magazine got the opportunity to talk it up with Rodney to see what he has in store for 2011. This guy is really funny BEyond BElief…
OK NOW I HAVE TO ASK THIS ONE QUESTION BEFORE WE EVEN GET THIS INTERVIEW STARTED…
(Rodney laughs) What is that?
WHAT IS IT THAT YOU WOULD LIKE FOR ME TO CALL YOU BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO CALL YOU FOR LIKE TWO DAYS NOW? (LAUGHS OUT LOUD)
You can call me whatever you like as long as you don’t curse me out.
I’M NOT GONNA CURSE YOU OUT (LAUGHS)
Oh ok, but yeah you can call me anything I don’t mind just don’t curse me out and stuff like that.
I WON’T, I’M NOT THAT KIND OF PERSON AND I WOULDN’T CURSE YOU OUT ANYWAYS. (LAUGHS OUT LOUD) SO, TELL ME RODNEY HOW DID YOU GET STARTED DOING COMEDY?
I had this teacher in 2nd grade who would let me tell jokes at the end of class, but I knew early on that it was something I wanted to do, BEcause I had a feel for it and it was something I loved doing. Watching Eddie Murphy and seeing how he was, it kind of taught me and I learned from there.
IT SAYS ON YOUR WEBSITE WHICH I AM LOOKING AT BY THE WAY THAT YOU DID SHOWS FOR THE US NAVY, AND THEY WERE SOME OF YOUR TOUGHEST AUDIENCES HOW WAS THAT FOR YOU?
Well I was in the Navy from 1990-1998 and I did shows for the crews and they were very tough BEcause you know the military is about toughness. You know they were the ones that helped you when you were fresh and nobody knew you. They were some of my biggest critics BEcause you know they say your family and friends are your toughest critics…hey I did get gonged and booed.
WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST BIG BREAK ON TELEVISION?
I got my first big break BET’s Comic View doing standup comedy with greats such as George Lopez, Cedric The Entertainer, and Steve Harvey. Working alongside them really taught me and I got to work with George Lopez for 4 years and he is one funny person it was amazing working with him BEcause he would sit down after every show and just write. Cedric The Entertainer is one of the most down to earth people you would meet he is so cool and laid back he respects people and shows humbleness to all. You know working with Steve he is taught me a lot about radio and doing the two hand and hand.
LET’S FLIP THE SCRIPT FOR A MINUTE AND GO INTO THE MOVIE SCENE, I SAW ON YOUR WEBSITE THAT YOU WERE IN “THE INFORMANT” WITH MATT DILLON?
Matt Dillon? (laughs out loud) You mean Matt Damon; you got your white people mixed up (laughs out loud) Working with Matt Damon was very cool and fun although the part I played in the movie got cut out you can still see it within the extras on the DVD. I went in an auditioned for the part on a Monday and they called me back like that Saturday and said that I got the part. I was kind of disappointed when they took it out BEcause I was thinking that “I am the only black person in the movie, yall should have kept the part Lol” but it was good BEcause it gave me the opportunity to get into the Movie and Actors Scene.
SO I’M LOOKING ON YOUR WEBSITE AND I NOTICED YOU HAVE YOUR OWN RADIO SHOW?
Well I have my own Blog Talk Radio show it is located on my home page on the website in the bottom right corner you can listen to all the interviews I have done there. The reason I started is because I wanted something that I could share with the fans and connect with my friends I have called up and/or sat down and interviewed Kevin Hart, Mo’ Nique, Steve Harvey. The one thing that we have now that I have found very useful that wasn’t available when I was growing up is that we have network access to do your own show and get yourself out there, learn, and get connections something we couldn’t do when I was getting into comedy.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN BEING ON THE MO’NIQUE SHOW?
Well BEing that the comedy scene is so small and I knew who Mo’Nique was previously and her knowing of me, she called me up and said she was looking for a sidekick to do her show with and she wanted me to come in and audition for the role. So I came in on like a Tuesday and auditioned and received a call on like a Friday saying that I got the role. As she was announcing to her team that she had big things and plans coming up in the near future I guess I was a part of the things.
I’M ACTUALLY LOOKING ON YOUR TWITTER PAGE NOW AND I SEE YOU ALSO STARTED UP YOUR OWN LIVE COMEDY SHOW. HOW IS THAT GOING?
Yes I did, it is called “All The Way Live”, and it is something I wanted to do so that I would be known down here in Atlanta and to show people that I was here. So I started up the comedy show and we have standup comedians, poets, and others doing their thing with a live dj and live band. It was something I could give back and show that I am here and want to inspire others.
SPEAKING OF MOVIES AND YOUR WEBSITE, YOU ARE STARRING IN TYLER PERRY’S “MADEA BIG HAPPY FAMILY” (THE MOVIE) RIGHT?
Yes! Yes, that is right, I will tell you a quick story on how that came about, I was actually doing comedy at my show and Tyler Perry right hand man Roger Bobb came and saw my show and told me about the movie and wanted me to come and audition for it. I was like cool so I went in the next day and auditioned and got a call the following night saying that I got the part. While filming they told me that they were trying to cast that role for 10 months.
I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THE MOVIE BECAUSE I SAW THE PLAY WHEN IT WAS IN TOWN AND RECENTLY BOUGHT IT, IT IS TOO FUNNY I LAUGHED THE WHOLE TIME.
Yes it is hilarious (laughs out loud). Since you have seen the play, I am going to BE playing the heckled husband to the woman that plays one of the daughters and you know with Madea it will be crazy funny.
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WANT YOUR FANS TO KNOW LIKE THE ONES THAT WANT TO GO INTO COMEDY?
The thing I want my fans or anybody who wants to be a comedian, actor, or teacher to know is that you have to work hard to get where you want to BE. It might take you 20 years or so to get there but as long as you work hard and don’t stop you will get there. You know some start of not wanting to go to college and they say they want to be a comedian well if that is want you want then do shows in front of audiences and keep doing them that is what makes you succeed. Don’t stop practicing.
Yeah I was so excited when J.Write told me I was going to BE interviewing Rodney Perry of the Mo’Nique Show. I was like I cant wait to do this interview BEcause I watch the show all the time and he is hilarious. (Lol)
Yeah working for Mo’Nique is cool we have fun working.
YEAH I NOTICED IN ONE OF YOUR BLOGS THAT YOU CALL IT PLAYING…
Yeah Mo’Nique doesn’t even want us to call it work BEcause we have so much fun.
WELL YOU DO HAVE TO HAVE FUN AT WORK SOMETIMES AND WORKING IS LIKE PLAYING.
Yeah working is like playing. Well I thank you for having me do this interview, I love doing interviews I like to show that I can be a laid back regular person and just BE myself.
LIKEWISE AND AGAIN I THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME & BE ENTERTAINED MAGAZINE THE OPPORTUNITY TO INTERVIEWING YOU… I HAD A LOT OF FUN.
